The Great Lakes Captains Association was organized in the spring of 1985 by local Straits of Mackinac commercial licensed boat operators who recognized a need to work closer together with other captains with similar situations and problems. Originally named Upper Great Lakes Captains Association, it was decided in the spring of 2001 to drop the word Upper to better reflect the wide scope of our membership.

The association seeks to promote safety, education and good fellowship between operators and others with related interests. The association informs members of events and programs that will help them in their jobs including updates and new rules to navigation. We work with boat owners and companies so there will be more informed communication and stronger cooperation between them and the workforce leading to safer boating practices.

A newsletter is published on a quarterly basis which provides pertinent and timely information especially on new laws proposed or enacted by our legislators on the local, state, and national levels. With the cooperation of the United States Coast Guard and the support of sponsors and suppliers, an annual Industry Days conference is held for all persons interested in the future of the marine industry.

Check back often for updates on the 2010 Industry Days conference. The Great Lakes Captains Association will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary and we have a special program planned.
